| Polaris,
the 22 metre wave piercing catamaran constructed for Brian and Nola
Backshall of Brisbane is a true testimony to the strong working
relationship and determination Q-West and the vessels Owners have
developed over the past 2 years.
In
May 2004 Q-West Boat Builders suffered a fire that destroyed the main
construction halls and three aluminium vessels, one of which was Brian
and Nola’s. The vessel was in the final stages of completion and was
due to be moved from the construction hall to the slipway, however the
fire occurred the day before the craft was moved. The fire, started by
an electrical fault in the buildings, completely gutted the vessel.
Q-West
rebuilt the construction halls and set about rebuilding all three
vessels destroyed in the fire. With Brian and Nola’s support the
construction of the second Polaris advanced to enable Q-West to produce
a quality aluminium craft that meets all the requirements of the
Queensland Survey authority and the Owners desire for practical systems
to enable Owner operation.
Polaris is fitted with two 3406 Caterpillar engines driving remote mounted reduction boxes and five blade propellers.
The
vessel has three deck levels with the lower deck accommodating the main
lounge, galley, laundry and three double cabins with ensuites and one
double bunk cabin. The mid deck level is fitted with the bridge lounge
and separate helm area. The upper deck is fitted with sun loungers. The
vessels interior is American Cherry and all cabins are air conditioned
The aft deck is fitted with a tender platform that lowers from deck level to below the waterline.
Polaris demonstrates
that successful vessels are not produced without the dedication of the
Builder, the understanding and trust of the Owner and a sheer
determination to succeed.
