In the specialised field of pilot transfer vessels, Port Taranaki’s new launch Mikotahi stands out.
The port began a lengthy evaluation process to find the best proven design, and Scotland-based firm Camarc Design was chosen. Wanganui boat builders Q-West, builders of the port’s oil field crew transfer vessel, carried out the construction. Mikotahi is one of New Zealand’s most modern vessels, meeting the highest international standards, and although it is primarily a pilot vessel, it has the ability to adapt seamlessly for use as a back up boat for the Pohukura gas platform.
